The "Elogio" for the conferment of the honorary degree in International Relations upon Boris Belenkin reflects on the relationship between memory, truth, and responsibility in the contemporary public sphere. Drawing on the experience of Memorial, and in particular on the work of collecting, preserving, and restoring the names of victims of Soviet repression, the text emphasizes that memory is not merely a retrospective exercise, but a civic practice that addresses the present. Referring to Walter Benjamin’s Theses on the Concept of History, the laudatio highlights the connection between remembrance and the recognition of the danger that threatens it: the reduction of memory to ritual, its neutralization, or its political instrumentalization. Within this framework, Belenkin’s work is presented as a rigorous and self-aware form of resistance to conformism and oblivion, grounded in archival precision, documentary care, and ethical responsibility. The awarding of the degree thus acknowledges the central role of memory in international relations, understood not only as a system of interests and balances, but as a space in which the relationship between human dignity, human rights, and historical truth is continuously at stake.

Abstract
The awarding of the degree thus acknowledges the central role of memory in international relations, understood not only as a system of interests and balances, but as a space in which the relationship between human dignity, human rights, and historical truth is continuously at stake.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
