This essay aims to offer an interpretation of the long historical journey that Eastern Europe has undergone from the post-Second World War period to the end of the Cold War. In particular, the author has focused on two key turning points: the establishment of communist regimes modelled on mature Stalinism, and the difficult path towards liberal democracy and a market economy following the fall of the communist regimes. Finally, particular attention will be paid to the emergence of anti-European and anti-democratic forces.
