This article is aimed at reflecting on the reasons for selecting either analytical constructions or equivalent synthetic encoding of complex predicates in Ancient Greek. By synthetic complex predicates noun incorporations are here meant. They are considered as complex predicates exclusively because two lexical morphemes are included in a single verbal form to express a unitary concept. The results show that specific nouns cannot be incorporated. Genericness being equal, incorporated nouns are always non-referential in the pragmatic sense.

Abstract

This article is aimed at reflecting on the reasons for selecting either analytical constructions or equivalent synthetic encoding of complex predicates in Ancient Greek. By synthetic complex predicates noun incorporations are here meant. They are considered as complex predicates exclusively because two lexical morphemes are included in a single verbal form to express a unitary concept. The results show that specific nouns cannot be incorporated. Genericness being equal, incorporated nouns are always non-referential in the pragmatic sense.
