In this context, it is interesting to consider the work of certain writers who have centred their poetics precisely on certain objects symbolic of the industrial and technological revolution – the lighthouse for Rachilde; the aeroplane for Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – whilst transforming their use and meaning, reclaiming them in the imagination and through language to express the needs of their inner worlds: the rebellion of the feminine against male predation on women and nature; the sense of fragility and loneliness as a driving force behind the vital quest for love and solidarity. Their example of resilience, in an age already radically transformed by technology, prompts us to reflect on the fundamental role of Poetry in ‘adapting our intellects’, as Camus puts it, ‘to the new realities offered by the world’.

Abstract

In this era, which Galimberti defines as the ‘age of technology’, the profound dimension of humanity risks remaining unexpressed, because it does not conform to the needs and pace of an organisational and value system that now serves only itself.
