This article examines the role of Italian radio in the mediatization of consumer culture from the postwar period to the second half of the 1960s. Within a media system generally interpreted through the centrality of television, radio emerges as a crucial agent of cultural modernization, connecting music, advertising, the record industry, and the construction of new audiences. After reconstructing the tensions between innovation and conservatism that shaped programming during the years of the economic boom, the article focuses on the transformation initiated under Leone Piccioni’s leadership and on the rise of RAI’s first disc jockeys: Renzo Nissim, Adriano Mazzoletti, Renzo Arbore, and Gianni Boncompagni. Through an analysis of radio programmes, press sources, and personal testimonies, it traces the transition from the traditional music programmer to a presenter endowed with a distinctive personality, able to select records independently, improvise on air, and establish an intimate relationship with listeners. Programmes such as Io e il mio amico Osvaldo, Disc Jockey, Bandiera Gialla, and Per voi giovani fostered the circulation of international musical trends, the formation of youth communities, and radio’s integration into the strategies of the record industry. The disc jockey thus transformed radio mediation and helped redefine radio as a space of consumption, generational identification, and cultural change.

Abstract
The disc jockey thus transformed radio mediation and helped redefine radio as a space of consumption, generational identification, and cultural change.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
