Given the term structure of interest rates, the spread between sovereign bonds is usually interpreted as a premium for default risk. However, empirical evidence from recent years casts doubts on this interpretation. This paper highlights some of its weaknesses and, through econometric analysis, shows how the government debt-to-GDP ratio is not relevant in explaining the trends in the spread between Italian BTPs and German Bunds, which is instead partly explained, in periods without inflationary and currency concerns, by liquidity premiums linked to the peculiarities and dynamics of the secondary market for BTPs.

Abstract
Given the term structure of interest rates, the spread between sovereign bonds is usually interpreted as a premium for default risk. However, empirical evidence from recent years casts doubts on this interpretation. This paper highlights some of its weaknesses and, through econometric analysis, shows how the government debt-to-GDP ratio is not relevant in explaining the trends in the spread between Italian BTPs and German Bunds, which is instead partly explained, in periods without inflationary and currency concerns, by liquidity premiums linked to the peculiarities and dynamics of the secondary market for BTPs.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
