Drawing on a reassessment of the available written sources, including the Liber Pontificalis and the epitaphs of the members of Pope John VII’s household, this contribution offers a reassessment of Pope John VII (705–707) and the significance of his patronage at St Peter’s. It supplements the proposed reconstruction of the Vatican oratory dedicated to the Theotokos with new drawings; presents previously unpublished research on the historical restoration of the Madonna della Clemenza undertaken by the Istituto Centrale del Restauro (ICR) in 1954–1955; and advances the hypothesis that the icon, now housed in the Altemps Chapel of Santa Maria in Trastevere, originally came from John VII’s Vatican oratory. There, the pope restored this sixth-century imago antiqua, adding his own portrait to the encaustic painting.

Abstract
There, the pope restored this sixth-century imago antiqua, adding his own portrait to the encaustic painting.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
