For the first time in Italy, this work offers an Italian translation accompanied by the Latin text, critically revised and enriched with historical and art-historical commentary. Antonella Ballardini’s contribution to the translation consisted in the systematic review of passages containing references to monuments and objects of artistic or archaeological significance; the preparation of archaeological and art-historical notes appended to the translation; and the writing of an original introductory essay devoted to the relationship between voces and res in the biographical accounts of the Roman pontiffs from Peter (64/67) to Sylvester (314-335).
