After a brief historiographical introduction to Louis Duchesne’s edition of the Liber Pontificalis (1873–1894) and Herman Geertman’s innovative approach to interpreting the accounts of the Roman pontiffs (1975), this contribution selects and discusses numerous entries referring to monuments and objects of archaeological and artistic significance, shedding light on the technical and bureaucratic nature of the lists in the Liber Pontificalis. Particular attention is devoted to terminology relating to ecclesiastical architecture, its ornamentation, furnishings, and liturgical equipment. Specific sections focus on the libellus constantinianus in the account of Pope Sylvester (314–337); the much-debated Lateran fastigium; the terms camera and absida; objects made of precious metals; and the use of lighting and fragrances within the space of worship. The analysis of these terms draws on tabular comparisons designed to establish the meanings of individual occurrences across different narrative contexts.

Abstract
The analysis of these terms draws on tabular comparisons designed to establish the meanings of individual occurrences across different narrative contexts.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
