Referring to the distinction proposed by theatre historian Claudio Meldolesi, based on Fernand Braudel’s analyses, of three distinct timeframes in the professional lives of actors (the short time of the performance, the medium time of modes of production, and the long time of techniques), to be observed in their interplay with contemporary historical dynamics, this paper examines the con- nection with his time of an actor, Vittorio Gassman, who played a central role in the history of Italian theatre and cinema. Through a few examples, particular attention is paid to his theatrical revival of nineteenth-century acting traditions, seen as a deliberate strategy for constructing his own independent artistic identity as an actor-experimenter, yet one detached from the ‘spirit of the age’.

Abstract
Referring to the distinction proposed by theatre historian Claudio Meldolesi, based on Fernand Braudel’s analyses, of three distinct timeframes in the professional lives of actors (the short time of the performance, the medium time of modes of production, and the long time of techniques), to be observed in their interplay with contemporary historical dynamics, this paper examines the con- nection with his time of an actor, Vittorio Gassman, who played a central role in the history of Italian theatre and cinema. Through a few examples, particular attention is paid to his theatrical revival of nineteenth-century acting traditions, seen as a deliberate strategy for constructing his own independent artistic identity as an actor-experimenter, yet one detached from the ‘spirit of the age’.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
