Abstract
The study gives a complete view of the artistic and architectural trends in Rome, starting from the end of the Seventeenth century, with the foundation of the Academy of Arcadia, to the XIX century after the restoration of Papal authority . The city shows a complex relationship between the changes of taste after the Baroque excesses. European culture was influenced by Roman Antiquities, but foreign artists and scholars had often a leading role in Rome, such as Raphael Mengs or Jacques-Louis David. The transformation of the Roman Classicism of the first half of Nineteenth century, leaded by G. Valadier and L. Canina, into an eclectic experimentalism, is well expressed in the second phase of Villa Torlonia, with the works by G.B. Caretti, Q. Raimondi and G.
