We propose a method for analyzing the occurrence of piping in earthen homogeneous levees. The method is based on simulations carried out by a saturated/unsaturated unsteady flow numerical model. The method employs a dimensionless formulation of the flow equations which model the phenomenon. The results are presented through graphs in dimensionless quantities which can be readily employed for the levee’s design. The method is further illustrated through an application example.

Abstract
