For non native-English speakers, mastering the technical jargon and complex English structure typical of legal communications is an immense challenge. With the assistance of a skilled instructor and well-planned group-learning activities, the prestigious Phillip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition can provide law students with the motivational force, attention to detail and the technical practice necessary to master the complex linguistic skills required in the competitive environment of international law. This article provides an overview of the Competition and describes a set of guidelines for teaching legal English through the Jessup. The author’s aim is to enhance and facilitate the achievement of learning objectives for teaching legal English and to encourage increased participation in the Competition in Italy, Europe and beyond.
