The main objective of the European EMAS Regulation is the reduction of enterprises environmental impacts through the setup and periodic revision of a comprehensive environmental management system (EMS): For those firms that operate in the waste treatment and disposal industry this represents a key issue and therefore this paper focuses on the application of the EMAS Regulation in this sector by registered Italian firms. The main tool of the study is a questionnaire that gave an interesting insight of the motivations of registration, the advantages that have been observed as well as the desired changes of the present version of the Regulation, and the difficulties encountered though the registration process.
