The hydrogeological setting of the area of Rome is extremely diversified owing to the occurrence of numerous hydrogeological units and systems. The right bank area of the Tiber river hosts low-discharge aquifers. Groundwater flowpaths are highly affected by the Monte Mario structural high, which rests on low-permeability formations. The left bank area of the Tiber river accommodates the north-western ramification of the Alban hydrogeological unit. This unit sustains much more substantial discharge and recharge processes. These conditions give rise to a perennial drainage network and to aquifer-river interactions that the Authors identified and quantified as part of numerous survey programmes conducted over multiple decades. The drainage network in the urban area has been significantly altered, even in areas where the river landscape might have been an environmental resource. The paper reports the findings from some investigations, which were carried out to identify geological risks in some areas of Rome. Hydrogeological analysis played a key role in these investigations.
