Una fonte per la storia musicale del Mezzogiorno d’Italia alla metà del XIX secolo: Il Regno delle Due Sicilie descritto ed illustrato di Filippo Cirelli

The paper draws the attention of scholars and researchers to a little-known source, rich in invaluable information on the history of music in Southern Italy during the period prior to the unification of the country: the Regno delle Due Sicilie descritto ed illustrato of Filippo Cirelli. In the original intention of Cirelli this work was to be an immense editorial undertaking, conceived with the idea of describing the entire kingdom of Naples through a series of monographs on the single municipalities, the fruit of research carried out in loco by expert collaborators. The diverse files were to have been bound together in 34 large volumes but the project, initiated in 1853, was interrupted in 1860 by the death of Cirelli. The present paper extracts from the monographs published (up to volume xvii) the items of major musicological and ethnomusicological interest, reproducing verbatim a wide selection of passages from the text. The material is presented classified in the following thematic areas: Aptitude, aesthetic taste, practice - Bands – Folk Songs - Education – Persons and instruments - Theatres – Uses and customs, dances. The information relative to the role of music in juvenile education is of particular interest, while the numerous ethnographic data, taken as a set, bear witness to the widespread variety of popular forms of song and dance as well as to the choice of instruments. The spread of the practice of music is demonstrated also in the section entitled Aptitude, aesthetic taste, practice, while that dedicated to Persons and instruments reveals the existence in the population of crafts and professions connected with music and also provides additional information on personalities of the seventeenth and earlier centuries. The information on town bands and the description of theatres are also of interest, while the last-named occasionally gives details of the theatical repertoires popular at the time.

Il contributo richiama all’attenzione degli studiosi una fonte poco conosciuta, ricca di informazioni utili per la storia musicale del Mezzogiorno d’Italia in epoca preunitaria: il Regno delle Due Sicilie descritto ed illustrato di Filippo Cirelli. Nelle intenzioni originarie del curatore, si trattava di un’immensa impresa editoriale, concepita per illustrare l’intero regno di Napoli attraverso una serie di monografie sui singoli comuni, frutto delle ricerche svolte in loco da esperti collaboratori. I fascicoli sarebbero dovuti confluire in 34 grandi volumi, ma il progetto, avviato nel 1853, s’interruppe nel 1860 per la morte di Cirelli. Dalle monografie pubblicate, che arrivano fino al volume XVII, il presente studio estrae le notizie di maggiore interesse musicologico ed etnomusicologico, trascrivendo letteralmente un’ampia selezione di passaggi del testo. Il materiale è presentato secondo un’articolazione in aree tematiche che fa riferimento ai seguenti ambiti: Attitudine, gusto, esercizio - Bande - Canzoni popolari - Istruzione - Persone e strumenti - Teatri - Usi e costumi, balli. Di particolare interesse appaiono le informazioni relative al ruolo della musica nell’educazione dei giovani, mentre l’insieme delle numerose notizie etnografiche testimonia della diffusa varietà di forme popolari nel canto, nel ballo e nell’utilizzo di strumenti. La diffusione delle pratiche musicali è attestata pure nella sezione denominata Attitudine, gusto, esercizio, mentre il paragrafo dedicato a Persone e strumenti rileva la presenza, nella popolazione, di mestieri e professioni legate alla musica, offrendo inoltre informazioni su personaggi vissuti nell’Ottocento e nei secoli precedenti. Interesse possono suscitare anche le informazioni sulle bande municipali e le descrizioni teatri, quest'ultime contenenti a volte notizie specifiche sui repertori drammatici in voga.
