The normal development of the newt Triturus carnifex carnifex is described from deposition to hatching and illustrated with the use of photographs of living embryos. The embryogenesis process is divided into five major phases (cleavage, gastrulation, neurulation, and organogenesis process split in two phases tail bud and ‘larva’) and into a sequence of 42 stages. A comparison to the staging scheme of development of some co-generic species is provided. An average of 50% (38– 62%) of T. carnifex embryos arrested development and died during the tail bud stages, confirming the presence of chromosome No. 1 heteromorphism in the nominate subspecies. Trait characteristics of two embryonic phenotypes were identified among the arrested embryos that were caused by the development arrest syndrome. Several features which have never been described previously were observed, such as the formation of a blister in the embryo ventral side, under the gill region in all homomorphic embryos.
