In the documentary research of the Lombard southern Italy, two case studies can be used to study the reletionship between princes and rural societies: Nocera in the IX century and Cilento in the X-XI century. The comparison between these two cases can be used to show both the differences between two rural societies included in the same political environment, and the princes' ability to change strategies and tools in order to adapt to different occurences and situations.
