The aim of this paper is to present part of the theoretical and analytical results of a research project on the narration of traumatic events such as war, death, exile and abandonment. In the narrations speakers build their emotions through linguistic and discursive choices and, in doing so, they build different formats of production and reception. The stories of traumatic events discussed proceed from oral narration in Italian and Spanish. The theoretical framework is that of cultural anthropology and social constructivism where the language is considered a means through which emotions are built and shaped. We start from the work of D. Schiffrin (1996) in which the author emphasizes that narrative allows the projection and the definition of identities, in fact they cannot be considered “established” and “fixed” because they depend on what the speakers “do” talking, depend on recipients and on the activities in which speakers are involved while talking: “narrative is a means by which to arrive at an understanding of the self as emergent from actions and experiences. The form, content and performance of narrative thus all provide sensitive indices of our personal selves and our social and cultural identities.” (1996: 194).
Objetivo del presente trabajo es presentar parte de los resultados -tanto de avance teórico como analítico- de un proyecto de investigación sobre la narración de acontecimientos traumáticos como lo son la guerra, la muerte, el exilio y el abandono. En las narraciones los hablantes construyen sus emociones gracias a elecciones lingüísticas que atañen a todos los niveles de la lengua y gracias al empleo de estructuras discursivas específicas; al hacerlo, acuden también a distintos formatos de recepción, contribuyendo así a construir la(s) identidad(es) del destinatario. Los cuentos de acontecimientos traumáticos que se analizan proceden de narraciones orales en italiano y en español. El marco teórico es el de la antropología cultural y del constructivismo social en donde la lengua es un medio a través del cual las emociones se construyen y adquieren forma. Por lo que concierne la narración partimos del trabajo de Schiffrin (1996) en el que la autora subraya que la narración permite la proyección y la definición de identidades que no se pueden considerar “rígidas” y “fijas” sino que dependen de lo que los hablantes “hacen” hablando, de sus destinatarios y de las actividades de discurso en las que estén involucrados: “narrative is a means by which to arrive at an understanding of the self as emergent from actions and experiences.
