A longitudinal study of correlations between the results of intra-language paraphrasing test results (in Italian) and academic results in interpreting exams in 46 interpreting students at the SSLMIT Trieste. The linguistic analysis of the product of paraphrasing focused on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects with specific categories of possible reformulations of each linguistic chunk in the source text. This was correlated with marks at interpreting exams and with the time required by students to complete their training. The study tentatively identified some good predictors of success. It also appeared that those students who completed their studies faster generally had higher marks, which suggests that the weight of pre-existing skills at the start of training may be larger than the weight of training as such. A serious, sophisticated analysis with potentially important implications, in view of the fact that the test involves linguistic-cognitive skills in one's native language only. If a few strong predictors could be identified, this might result in spectacular gain in the efficiency of selection procedures for conference interpreting programmes.
