Evidence is presented that the first images of maize in Europe are to be found in the festoons painted by Giovanni da Udine about 1518 that surround the frescoes designed by Raphael Sanzio at the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the fabulous residence of the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi. The maize images indicate genetic diversity based on ear length and type. The presence of maize images in Rome only 25 years after Columbus’ encounter with the New World is evidence of a very rapid diffusion into Europe.

Abstract
Evidence is presented that the first images of maize in Europe are to be found in the festoons painted by Giovanni da Udine about 1518 that surround the frescoes designed by Raphael Sanzio at the Villa Farnesina in Rome, the fabulous residence of the Sienese banker Agostino Chigi. The maize images indicate genetic diversity based on ear length and type. The presence of maize images in Rome only 25 years after Columbus’ encounter with the New World is evidence of a very rapid diffusion into Europe.File in questo prodotto:
