In the catalogue of the exhibition at the Capitoline Museums in Rome on the sixth centenary from the birth of L.B. Alberti. The surviving Roman triumphal arches are examined in connection with the ancient texts, as well as to their influence on the literary work of fifteenth-century humanists such as Emanuele Chrysoloras. In particular, ancient typology is analysed in connection with Alberti’s theory and practice of design. The drawings in the exhibition are compared with the actual remains of arches in Rome and surroundings, with reference to their original architectural image and their probable state of preservation in the age of Alberti.
