The Vaaz: Rise and Fall of a Family of Portuguese Bankers in Spanish Naples (1590-1660)

The Vaaz family case, new Christian bankers (i.e., recently converted Hebrews) natives of Lisbon that moved to Naples at the end of the sixteenth century, is representative of the strategies of social assimilation in the context of the Catholic Monarchy. Retracing the parabola of the Vaaz family in Spanish Naples it becomes evident that a strong position in the world of finance was not enough to avoid the social collapse of a powerful family of bankers.

Il caso della famiglia Vaaz, banchieri conversos originari di Lisbona e trasferitisi a Napoli alla fine del XVI secolo, è esemplificativo delle strategie di assimilazione sociale nel contesto della Monarchia Cattolica. Ricostruendo la parabola dei Vaaz si mette in evidenza come nella Napoli spagnola anche una grande affermazione nel mondo della finanza, non accompagnata da un prestigio sufficientemente consolidato, non fosse sufficiente a mettere a riparo una pur potente famiglia di banchieri dal tracollo sociale.
