The issue analyzes the contemporary transformation of the meaning of public space with particular reference to the development of new settlements in the city of Rome. From a few examples of projects for competitions held in Rome in the last five years, the article questions the meaning of public space in the size of the metropolitan city with particular reference to changes of scale occurred in the recent expansion of the city.
