Abstract

Terms as "dancer" and "actor" evoke theatrical traditions and institutions, as well as different cultures and contexts. Identifying historical moments of special significance – from the ballet d'action of Noverre to Tanztheater Pina Bausch – places here the question of the separation between theatre and dance, emphasizing the challenge of artists in search of "what moves people and not the way in which they move.” From the premise of Bel Danzare and the Imitation of Nature in eighteenth-century ballet and pantomime in the nineteenth century to the thought-in-movement of Laban and the transcendence of Nijinsky, this anthology presents the author's choice of sources and studies in a polyphony of complementary voices: those of artists and scholars who started significant cultural querelles.
