The architecture of distinct orogenic segments from the central Apennines to Sicily have been compared in order to establish their relation with the Tyrrhenian opening. Our data evidence that along the peri-Tyrrhenian orogenic belt, the contractional deformation roughly balanced the extension in the adjacent Tyrrhenian domain and that the variable orientation of the compression across the Calabrian arc could derive from the combination between the Nubia-Eurasia convergence and an additional component of motion which distributed radially in the Tyrrhenian region. © Società Geologica Italiana, Roma 2013.

Abstract

The architecture of distinct orogenic segments from the central Apennines to Sicily have been compared in order to establish their relation with the Tyrrhenian opening. Our data evidence that along the peri-Tyrrhenian orogenic belt, the contractional deformation roughly balanced the extension in the adjacent Tyrrhenian domain and that the variable orientation of the compression across the Calabrian arc could derive from the combination between the Nubia-Eurasia convergence and an additional component of motion which distributed radially in the Tyrrhenian region. © Società Geologica Italiana, Roma 2013.
