The editor's essay discusses in depth, and with a rigorous historical methodology, the main strategies which the United States employed to influence the transformation of the Italian political system from the moderate centrism of the 1950s to the center-left of the 1960s - a period which is currently under close scrutiny by historians of international relations all across Europe and the United States.
