In the paper I try to reconstruct, under an historical and cultural point of view, the evolution of the iconography of reading in Greek art since the IV century b. C. to the roman age, examining the first figurative cycles with Muses, made during the first hellenistic age, the portraits of great poets, philosophers and artists accomplished during the III century b. C., and the funerary steles from Asia Minor of the I century b. C.
