Of the two Crawford, was to enjoy a huge celebrity in his lifetime, while James far less successful with the average reader of his days, would be appreciated and popular mostly after his death. But Crawford, most humble and gentlemanly in their private intercourse, was vastly aware of James superiority, and did not hide his admiration for him , while James, in his letters to other friends could not disguise his frustration, his rage and jealousy.
