The article deals with the influence the European Union and enlargement had on the Eastern European processes of democratization. In fact, European “conditionality” affects democratic consolidation, even if it rarely determines consolidation. Furthermore conditionality is an interactive process rather than a one-way export of influence. So another question is about the consequences of enlargement on European institutions and on European identity.
