The fossil record of terrestrial mammals during the Miocene is definitely poor during the Early and Middle Miocene. During this time span the record is so scanty that we have only a few localities (Burgio in Sicily; Oschiri and Sardara in Sardinia) which provide information on the distribution of emergent lands.
