This article looks at the forms of communication and promotion of contemporary art production in the second half of 18th century. The analysis touches upon the different aspects which emerge, e.g., the dialogue between history and criticism and in particular we stress the relation between the different sources for the analysis of the role of art market (Export licenses in Camerale II of the Archivio di Stato), and the historical judgement (Ennio Quirino Visconti, Luigi Lanzi, Carlo Fea) in the process of re-evaluation of the cosmopolitan Roman artistic system in Europe.
