Hellenistic chronology is in a bewildering state: it is very difficult to know, e.g., in which period Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica were published. But there are also specific hints in Theocritus and Apollonius by which it is possible to remark that Hellenistic poets knew compositions of other famous poets, much time before a written publication of their texts. This could happen through different ways, written contacts between each others, or on occasion of official public performances, as we can see, e.g., in Argonautica 1 (Hylas’ episode), Theocritus 13, Argonautica 3.760-9 and 4.57-65, and finally Theocritus 2.

Abstract
Hellenistic chronology is in a bewildering state: it is very difficult to know, e.g., in which period Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica were published. But there are also specific hints in Theocritus and Apollonius by which it is possible to remark that Hellenistic poets knew compositions of other famous poets, much time before a written publication of their texts. This could happen through different ways, written contacts between each others, or on occasion of official public performances, as we can see, e.g., in Argonautica 1 (Hylas’ episode), Theocritus 13, Argonautica 3.760-9 and 4.57-65, and finally Theocritus 2.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
