This article explores some questions realted to the use of 'landscape' in contemporary South African women's poetry in English and Afrikaans. Intertwining landscape imagery with individual and general issues, these poets discard most of the clichés common in men's poetry: what emerges from the recollection of a heterogeneous corpus of texts are modes of affiliation, affection or mirroring in the relationship between the lyrical subject, her body and the lanscape. These aspects, together with the theme of language and its power and limitations, will be analyzed also in the complex historical, social and political context of South Africa. This article is developed in two separate parts: one by Guarducci, focussing on poems in English, and one by Terrenato, focussing on Afrikaans poetry. All discussed poets were born in the Twentieth century; their activity covers the period 1956-2012 ca. Poets writing in English include. Ruth Miller, Ingrid de Kok, Yvette Christianse, Makhosazana Xaba, malika Ndlovu. Poets writing in Afrikaans include: Ingrid Jonker, Antjie Krog, Diana Fergus, and Ronelda Kamfer.
