Teatro come bene comune. La regia al suo nascere e il Novecento

The beginnings of the director’s role are more than a century old, yet still relevant to us. This essay reconsiders some questions concerning the age of the masters: the stratigraphy of a historical phenomenon that cannot be reduced to a few exceptional figures; its complex relationship with the “old” actors’ theatre. Above all, it investi- gates the role played throughout the 20th century by such strong shared reference points. What were the consequences of these questions and values shared by scholars and practitioners, following sundry trends and moved by different needs? In order to answer we must still examine the problem posed by the relationship between theatre practices and historiography and by the conditioning influence that shared practical experiences can have on theatre studies.

Un secolo abbondante di teatro ci separa dalla regia al suo nascere, eppure ancora ci riguarda. Questo saggio ridisegna alcuni interrogativi sull'età dei maestri. Ma si interroga soprattutto sul ruolo che hanno avuto, nel corso del Novecento teatrale, la condivisione di punti di riferimento così forti. Sono stati un interrogativo e un bene comune a tutti, studiosi e teatranti. Con che conseguenze? Da questo punto di vista bisogna interrogarsi ancora sul problema del rapporto tra pratica e mestiere di storico, e su quello della influenza, fondamentale e condizionante, che una condivisione di forti esperienze pratiche può avere su studi peculiari quanto quelli teatrali.
