The essay is devoted to the use of wooden tablets in the ancient Graeco-Roman world. After a review of iconographical, archaeological, literary and documentary sources, wooden tablets are discussed according to their origins, morphologies and uses; based upon the data presented, observations are made upon the role that the continuous use of wooden tablets from ancient times might have played in birth of the book in codex form and its subsequent adoption as the predominant book form in the ancient Graeco-Roman world by the 3rd-4th c. CE
