To improve the liveability of the urban environment and to guarantee a widespread accessibility, it seems helpful to deal with the redesign of streets and public spaces together with the reorganization of mobility in a sustainable way. This paper refers to research works and tests, carried out and in progress, which, to that aim, analysed limits and possibilities of application of the Environmental Island tool and of a specific design approach, testing them also in two university districts of the city of Rome.
