Abstract

n several palces, Siascia shows a certain lack of patience with Benedetto Croce, particularly in relation to his literary criticism. He rejects out of hand Croce's judgements on Pirandello, Manzoni and De Roberto, even thoug only in the case of I Viceré de we see any sort of extended critical discussion. This essay re-examines the main points of Sciascia's disagreements with Croce's literary criticism focusing in particular on his quite different appraisal of De Roberto's novel. It also looks at the presence of Croce in Sciascia's school and university education, and points out how other aspects of Croce's cultural activity, such as his editorial work, or as local historian, receive a much more sympatehtic teratement by Sciascia.
