Nonradiative dielectric waveguides employing metamaterial media are studied with the aim of obtaining unimodal surface-wave propagation for the operating low-loss LSM01 mode. Homogeneous isotropic -negative media are considered, with a plasma-like frequencydependent relative permittivity. The use of such media allows for obtaining the desired unimodal propagation in suitable frequency ranges, provided that the metamaterial slab thickness and the metal-plate spacing are sufficiently small. Parametric analyses are performed to determine the attainable frequency bandwidths.

Abstract

Nonradiative dielectric waveguides employing metamaterial media are studied with the aim of obtaining unimodal surface-wave propagation for the operating low-loss LSM01 mode. Homogeneous isotropic -negative media are considered, with a plasma-like frequencydependent relative permittivity. The use of such media allows for obtaining the desired unimodal propagation in suitable frequency ranges, provided that the metamaterial slab thickness and the metal-plate spacing are sufficiently small. Parametric analyses are performed to determine the attainable frequency bandwidths.
