The article aims to illustrate the urban expansion of Rome during the liberal and fascist periods, favouring the use of quantitative sources. The development and critical analysis of the sources are two central elements of the work, which uses both the statistics produced by the central administration and the municipal investigations. The multiplicity of the sources and the wide chronological period considered (1870-1938) allow a diachronic analysis of the forms and instruments used to measure the city, closely linked to the purposes of the statistics and the relationship between the State and the peripheral authorities.

Abstract

The article aims to illustrate the urban expansion of Rome during the liberal and fascist periods, favouring the use of quantitative sources. The development and critical analysis of the sources are two central elements of the work, which uses both the statistics produced by the central administration and the municipal investigations. The multiplicity of the sources and the wide chronological period considered (1870-1938) allow a diachronic analysis of the forms and instruments used to measure the city, closely linked to the purposes of the statistics and the relationship between the State and the peripheral authorities.
