Abstract

The recent debate on the so called post-truth continues to produce biased interpretations of contemporary social reality, but the complexity of the phenomena requires more sophisticated approaches and interpretative tools. Starting from a reconsideration of the relationship between culture and technology, it is appropriate to put aside a conception of media as mere tools, in order to investigate and understand the constitutive dynamics of knowledge production processes and dissemination. By analyzing from this point of view the practices of outsourcing and sharing knowledge, it can be easier to become aware of the contemporary communicative ecosystem, in which, according to the prevailing interpretations, posttruth would be an inevitable outcome. Information overload has imposed the theme of media literacy as a fundamental dimension for active citizenship: the crisis of traditional institutions can not be overcome by delegating to corporations and algorithms the task and responsibility of filtering informations and their reliability. A partial answer to the misinformation problems can be found in a productive interweaving between scientific culture and hacker culture values.
