The need for a more pronounced opening of academia towards the “external” has determined that the so-called “third mission” gradually came up beside the two typical “missions” of University: teaching and researching. The implications of this “opening” are studied in the essay and situated in the context of a more general reflexion on the “constitutional” tasks that the University is called upon to perform, together with school institutions. In the final part of the essay, the author proposes a concrete declination of the contents of the “third mission”, analysing their possible consequences on the organization of the University governance. In the light of the contents that the so-called third mission may acquire, the author suggests an overcoming of the abused “label”, that recalls a residuality which doesn’t reflect the importance of the commitment of an University that wants to look at the future and that may intercept and contribute to solve social issues.

Abstract
The need for a more pronounced opening of academia towards the “external” has determined that the so-called “third mission” gradually came up beside the two typical “missions” of University: teaching and researching. The implications of this “opening” are studied in the essay and situated in the context of a more general reflexion on the “constitutional” tasks that the University is called upon to perform, together with school institutions. In the final part of the essay, the author proposes a concrete declination of the contents of the “third mission”, analysing their possible consequences on the organization of the University governance. In the light of the contents that the so-called third mission may acquire, the author suggests an overcoming of the abused “label”, that recalls a residuality which doesn’t reflect the importance of the commitment of an University that wants to look at the future and that may intercept and contribute to solve social issues.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
