Abstract

The biographical itinerary and the speculative development of Edith Stein offer a precious material to reflect on the relationships between philosophy and mysticism, considered as two ways to approach the truth, without yielding to the temptation to immanentize the divine by reducing it to the individual conscience or There is therefore in common between the two saints the interest towards the kingdom of the soul, which appears in all its richness but also in its fragility. The encounter with the writings of Teresa de Ávila represents for Edith Stein the impulse to the conversion to Christianity and to the entrance in the Carmel of Cologne. In the Appendix of Being finite and eternal, entitled The inner castle (Die Seelenburg), the analysis of the image of the inner Castle of Teresa offers the philosopher the opportunity to explore, in a fertile synthesis of phenomenology and metaphysics, the nature and the dynamism of the soul, in its relationship with the psyche and the spirit. There is therefore in common between the two saints the interest towards the kingdom of the soul, which appears in all its richness but also in its fragility.
