L’ex Deposito Atac "Vittoria" a piazza Bainsizza

This essay synthetically traces the urban evolution of the Prati-delle Vittorie district of Rome, highlighting the role that the building – constructed as a depot and workshop for trams – had in its configuration. It sets out the constructive history of the building and its architectural features, which today are recognisable as industrial archaeology. It dwells on the recent history of the abandonment and planned demolition, reporting the initiatives promoted by the citizens who have contested the programs of privatisation and building speculation, and have contributed to the protection of the building by institutions. It describes a process of active participation that kept alive the attention to urban quality and watched over its maintenance, whilst envisaging for this architectural complex a future in which it could become a usable good, enhanced in its historical and architectural values but also in the urban and therefore social meanings.

Il contributo ripercorre sinteticamente l’evoluzione urbana del quartiere Prati-delle Vittorie mettendo in evidenza il ruolo che l’edificio, nato come deposito ed officina per i tram, ha avuto nella sua configurazione. Delinea la storia costruttiva dell’edificio e le caratteristiche architettoniche dello stesso che oggi lo rendono riconoscibile quale manufatto di archeologia industriale. Si sofferma sulla recente storia dell’abbandono e della prevista demolizione, riportando le iniziative promosse dai cittadini che hanno contrastato i programmi di privatizzazione e speculazione edilizia ed hanno contribuito alla tutela del bene da parte delle istituzioni. Descrive un processo di partecipazione attiva che ha mantenuto viva l’attenzione sulla qualità urbana e vigilato sul mantenimento di essa prospettando per questo complesso architettonico un futuro in cui esso possa divenire un bene fruibile, valorizzato nei valori storici ed architettonici ma anche urbani e quindi sociali.
