La New Mechanics Hall di Dominique Perrault all’EPFL

The renovation of the ME Building, now New Mechanics Hall, was carried out between 2011 and 2016 by the Dominique Perrault Architecture and Steiner SA team, within the Federal Polytechnic of Lausanne (EPFL), where Perrault teaches. The building was built by the Zweifel + Strickler Associates team in the 1970s as a mechanical engineering department, during the first phase of campus development. The research that the French architect has been conducting for some time now, in collaboration with the company GKD Metal Fabrics, finds a happy opportunity for application in the project of internal refurbishment and reconfiguration of the entire building. This, for clarity and technical precision, represents a model of integration between collective spaces and spaces dedicated to research. The consolidated experience in the use of mesh grids is aimed at making the volumes resulting from a compact shape as light as possible, up to making them ethereal. Its severe architecture and outside the logic of spectacularization, sophisticated but not the protagonist, offers itself as an example of integration on several scales: between pre-existing and new, and between building and context.

L’intervento di ristrutturazione del ME Building, oggi New Mechanics Hall, è stato realizzato tra il 2011 e il 2016 dal team Dominique Perrault Architecture e Steiner SA, all’interno del Politecnico Federale di Losanna (EPFL), dove Perrault insegna. L’edificio fu costruito dal team Zweifel + Strickler Associates negli anni ’70 come reparto di ingegneria meccanica, durante la prima fase di sviluppo del campus. La ricerca che l’architetto francese conduce ormai da tempo, in collaborazione con l’azienda GKD Metal Fabrics, trova nel progetto di rifunzionalizzazione interna e riconfigurazione dell’intero edificio una felice occasione di applicazione. Questo, per chiarezza e precisione tecnica, rappresenta un modello di integrazione tra spazi collettivi e spazi dedicati alla ricerca. La consolidata esperienza nell’uso delle mesh grids è volta al fine di rendere il più leggere possibili volumetrie derivanti da una forma compatta, fino a renderle eteree. La sua architettura severa e fuori dalle logiche della spettacolarizzazione, sofisticata ma non protagonista, si offre come esempio di integrazione a più scale: tra preesistente e nuovo, e tra edificio e contesto.
