The essay investigates two contemporary rewritings of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly – David Henry Hwang’s play M. Butterfly (1988) and David Cronenberg’s film by the same title (1993). Both the play and film problematize and deconstruct the cultural assumptions that have traditionally shaped western visions of the “Orient.” Yet, it is especially in the film that a keen exploration of the powerful trans-cultural fantasy prompted by the Puccini opera takes place, along with an investigation of the limits that define the relationship between image and gaze.

Abstract

The essay investigates two contemporary rewritings of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly – David Henry Hwang’s play M. Butterfly (1988) and David Cronenberg’s film by the same title (1993). Both the play and film problematize and deconstruct the cultural assumptions that have traditionally shaped western visions of the “Orient.” Yet, it is especially in the film that a keen exploration of the powerful trans-cultural fantasy prompted by the Puccini opera takes place, along with an investigation of the limits that define the relationship between image and gaze.
