Diceopoli e Pericle tra realtà ed utopia

In his early plays Aristophanes attacks Cleon. He portrays himself as Heracles who fights against the monstrous Cleon, and also presents himself as the good rhetor, the only person who could teach and lead the Athenians. This agrees with the representation of Pericles in Thucydides’ Histories. Playing this role naturally is unrealistic; however, it is necessary for the poet to instaurate, find and maintain a spe-cial relationship with the Athenian spectators and obtain their favour and admiration.

Nelle sue commedie più antiche Aristofane attacca Cleone. Egli si auto-rappresenta come Eracle in lotta col mostruoso Cleone ma anche come il buon politico, l'unico che può educare e guidare gli Ateniesi. Questo concorda con la rappresentazione di Pericle nelle Storie di Tucidide. Naturalmente si tratta di un'invenzione comica; tuttavia, è necessaria al poeta per instaurare, trovare e mantenere una relazione speciale con il pubblico degli spettatori Ateniesi e ottenere il loro favore e apprezzamento
