In a historical perspective, contemporary Italy seems an exceptional political workshop, which anticipated many of the difficulties and problems of modern mass politics. The essay attempts to trace some of the reasons for this, focusing on the contradictions of the catholic presence in the twentieth-century: the legacy of fascism, a failed landing to modernity, the myth of a ‘catholic nation’, the politicization of religion, a Catholic political party that, conquering the position of the ‘party of the nation’, introduced many features of continuity in the ‘catholic succession’ to fascism.

Abstract

In a historical perspective, contemporary Italy seems an exceptional political workshop, which anticipated many of the difficulties and problems of modern mass politics. The essay attempts to trace some of the reasons for this, focusing on the contradictions of the catholic presence in the twentieth-century: the legacy of fascism, a failed landing to modernity, the myth of a ‘catholic nation’, the politicization of religion, a Catholic political party that, conquering the position of the ‘party of the nation’, introduced many features of continuity in the ‘catholic succession’ to fascism.
