Il posto dell’attore sociale nei radicalization and terrorism studies

Through a critical perspective, the paper analyzes the two main theoretical perspectives in radicalization and terrorism studies, which are both based on simplistic premises about the role of a social actor: on the one hand there is the culturalist perspective that considers the radicalized as a social actor hyperresponsible for his own actions and completely defined by an integralist religious essence; on the other hand there is a social vulnerability perspective that revolves around a paternalistic and passive conception of the actor. Our main thesis is that we need to distance ourselves from both these approaches in order to put a realistic vision of the subject (defined by a complex interweaving of agency and social influences) back at the center of the theory.

Questo saggio si occupa di analizzare, in un’ottica critica, le due principali prospettive relative allo studio della radicalizzazione, centrate su assunti semplificatori speculari sullo statuto dell’attore sociale: la prospettiva culturalista che considera il radicalizzato come un attore sociale iper-responsabile delle sue azioni e tutto definito da un’essenza religiosa integralista; la prospettiva della vulnerabilità sociale che, al contrario, ruota attorno ad una concezione paternalista e passiva dell’attore. La principale tesi da noi sostenuta è che occorre prendere le distanze da entrambi questi approcci per rimettere al centro una visione realistica del soggetto, definito da un complesso intreccio tra agency e influenze sociali.
