The Rome presented by the drawings from the Lanciani collection is one recreated in pen and ink. The fifteen designs introduced in this essay, all dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, are concerned with urban decoration. Some are of world-renowned works – the Spanish steps, the decoration of the Trevi fountain and the Piazza del Quirinale – while others are rare projects dealing with unexecuted ideas by little known, or completely unknown architects or artists. The discussion of the subjects offered by these drawings – the embellishment of the city and the creation of its urban spaces – provides an historical analysis in order to understand the reasons behind the interventions represented by each sheet.

Abstract
The Rome presented by the drawings from the Lanciani collection is one recreated in pen and ink. The fifteen designs introduced in this essay, all dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries, are concerned with urban decoration. Some are of world-renowned works – the Spanish steps, the decoration of the Trevi fountain and the Piazza del Quirinale – while others are rare projects dealing with unexecuted ideas by little known, or completely unknown architects or artists. The discussion of the subjects offered by these drawings – the embellishment of the city and the creation of its urban spaces – provides an historical analysis in order to understand the reasons behind the interventions represented by each sheet.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
